The passengers are reduced to nothingness - the place is a vacuum - and therefore you can relax and wallow in the lack of belonging, the lack of outside references (except if you are bovine-canny). There's also the marvellous sense of underbelly and under-statement at Schonefeld. When you do get into Berlin proper it's all the more attractive.
