Top Concrete Table

I.W. Thu 14th May ’09

This is one hell of a tasty table. Rough, super-thin concrete slab on top, bandy steel legs below. The dreamy thing about the legs is that they’re made of hot dip galvanized steel bars, commonly used in reinforced concrete. So-called “rebars”. The table is one of about twenty examples to be found on the terrace of Hotel Diogenis in Tsagarada, all hand made by the proprietor’s brother-in-law.

looks tasty – but is it stable? in the photo it appears a tad top-heavy and i fear a topple if my tipple slips too close to the edge.

I didn’t actually test the tables for stability, so enthralled was I by their haptic and visual qualities. But I wasn’t left with the impression that this was a failed experiement. The photo, with its rakish angle, does justice neither to the angle of the feet, or their length, which was quite considerable. The tips of the feet extended beyond the edge of the table top by some measure, and should guarantee non-toppled tipples. If anything, the table-top made a brittle impression, which may explain the missing corners: as though the author had anticipated damage. A nice philosophy: leave out what might break.
